Savvy Caregiver Program

The Savvy Caregiver Program (SCP) provides training for persons who are caring for family members who have a dementing illness, such as Alzheimer's disease. It's designed to help empower caregivers with the key skills, knowledge and sense of competence needed for caregiving, reducing the stresses of caregiving, and increasing the likelihood of caregiving success.

If you or your family member with Alzheimer's is a resident of Albany County, you qualify for this training free of charge. Programs consist of six two-hour meetings, held weekly. Class size is limited. The program trains family members for the role of a caregiver in four main areas:

  • Managing Daily Life: Keep the Person Enjoyably Involved
  • Managing Behavior: Help the Person Remain Calm and in Control
  • Managing Own Well-being: Caregiver Self-Care
  • Managing Resources, Including Family Resources for Care

For more information or to register for an upcoming class, please call the Cogswell Resource Center at Marjorie Doyle Rockwell Center, (518) 238-4164.

The Savvy Caregiver Program is supported by grant funding from the NYS Office for Aging, and the Albany County Department of Aging.
